Beginners Crochet and Vintage Eyebright Doily

For years and years I have always wanted to be able to crochet but no matter how many times I have been shown I have never been able to get the hang of it.

I think it may have been partly down to the fact that I am left handed and was always shown with the hook in my left hand and apart from handwriting I actually do 99% of other things right handed.

Anyway, I have recently picked up the knitting needles again and thought with the aid of YouTube I would try and have a go at crochet again.

Found a fabulous site called Bella Coco - How to crochet for absolute beginners.  Here are my first few goes that I started on 23 May with the wool I had left over from the baby hat.

My Mum in law then sent me some proper crochet yarn and some old Crochet Monthly magazines with crochet charts in.  She recommended that I start with this one.

However, this meant that there was no lovely Bella Coco to follow.  Instead I had to follow this chart.

It's like learning a completely new language!

Anyway, I (sort of) completed it a couple of days ago and here it is.

It's not identical on the last few rounds as I knew I wasn't going to have enough yarn and I was trying to get away with it.  I didn't!

It has got several mistakes in it where I haven't chained enough or I have chained too many and my tension needs to improve but from starting from a complete novice to an almost completed doily of about 12 inches diameter in about two weeks, I am very happy.

It has now been pulled back, yarn washed and ready for my next beginners piece.  And if I can do it, anyone can!
